DaVinci Robotic Surgery for Sleep Apnea
At the Voice and Swallowing Center of Puerto Rico, we are committed to providing modern, efficient, and patient-centered care. Therefore, we have integrated Da Vinci robotic surgery technology as an advanced alternative for the treatment of sleep apnea and primary snoring.
This video explains when robotic surgery with the Da Vinci system is recommended for patients with sleep apnea and primary snoring. Surgery is indicated in two scenarios:
- Primary Snoring: The procedure combines turbinate reduction and septal repair with a partial resection of the center of the base of the tongue and tonsil removal (if present). A sphincter pharyngoplasty is also performed to reduce soft palate vibration during the night.
- Moderate or Mild Apnea: This is an option for patients who have not tolerated standard treatments, such as CPAP machines or dental appliances. A surgery similar to that performed for primary snoring is carried out with the goal of eliminating sleep apnea.
Thanks to the precision, effectiveness, and excellent visibility provided by the Da Vinci system, this surgery offers a high success rate, with cure rates of around 70% to 80%, providing a viable alternative for many patients.
Integrating technology into our procedures allows us to remain at the forefront of modern medicine and continue offering accessible, high-quality care.
