What is spasmodic dysphonia?
At the Voice and Swallowing Center of Puerto Rico (Centro de Voz y Tragado de Puerto Rico), we are committed to providing modern, efficient, and patient-centered care. For this reason, we offer specialized diagnosis and treatment for neurological voice disorders such as spasmodic dysphonia.
In this video, it is explained that spasmodic dysphonia is a neurological disorder that causes interruptions and tension in the voice, often associated with long periods of stress. Individuals with this condition may sound strained, choppy, or as if their voice suddenly cuts out. It is important to note that while it can be mistaken for anxiety, it is actually a dysfunction in the nerves that control the movement of the vocal cords. The good news is that symptoms can improve with treatment. In many cases, voice therapy is combined with Botox injections to relax the involved vocal muscles. If you have noticed your voice cracking, sounding forced, or simply interrupting when speaking, it is recommended to seek a professional evaluation.
Integrating a multidisciplinary approach for the diagnosis and treatment of spasmodic dysphonia allows us to stay at the forefront of modern medicine and continue to offer accessible and high-quality care.
