Thyroid Surgery
At the Puerto Rico Voice and Swallowing Center, we are committed to providing modern, efficient, and patient-centered care. Therefore, we prioritize the use of advanced techniques such as minimally invasive thyroid surgery, which allows for a faster and more comfortable recovery.
This video explains minimally invasive thyroid surgery and when it is indicated. In our practice, we make incisions of less than 3 cm to remove the entire gland. This technique is used in patients with:
- Benign thyroid tumors.
- Papillary thyroid cancer (when lesions are small).
The minimally invasive technique is much better tolerated than traditional surgery, which involved a larger incision and a longer recovery. The key to this modern surgery is the use of monitoring systems and small instruments that allow us to:
- Create a small incision (about an inch or slightly more).
- Remove drains in most patients.
- Closing the incision with adhesive makes recovery more comfortable and easier for the patient to tolerate.
Integrating advanced surgical techniques and technology into our procedures allows us to stay at the forefront of modern medicine and continue providing accessible, high-quality care.
