Laser Surgery

At the Puerto Rico Voice and Swallowing Center, we are committed to providing modern, efficient, and patient-centered care. Therefore, we have integrated endoscopic laser surgery as a precise technique for treating various vocal cord lesions.

This video explains the application of laser treatment to the vocal cords for the treatment of:

  • Benign lesions.
  • Premalignant and malignant lesions.

The laser is particularly effective in the case of vocal cord papillomas (caused by the human papillomavirus), as it is able to disrupt and cauterize the blood supply that feeds the papilloma’s growth.

In the case of premalignant or malignant lesions, the laser is used to cut the tissue (skin and muscle if it is an advanced cancer). For early premalignant lesions, the laser allows for the removal of the superficial skin containing the lesion and then burning (ablation) the remaining surface. This allows the remaining skin to slough off and regenerate as new tissue, preventing the lesion from invading deeper structures.

Integrating laser technology into our procedures allows us to stay at the forefront of modern medicine and continue offering precise, accessible, and high-quality care.
