Walkthrough Nerve Monitoring System

At the Voice and Swallowing Center of Puerto Rico (Centro de Voz y Tragado de Puerto Rico), we are committed to providing modern, efficient, and patient-centered care. For this reason, we integrate advanced technology like the Nirvana Plus nerve monitoring system to ensure patient safety and function during surgery.

In this video, the technology we use for nerve monitoring in head and neck surgery is explained. The Nirvana Plus system is not a standard monitor; it performs live electromyography (EMG). This means surgeons can actively see the electrical pulses passing through the nerves while operating. The system uses small needles placed in the muscles to be monitored and a closed circuit with a dissecting clamp that signals the nerve’s action potential when separating tissue.

This technology is crucial in head and neck, thyroid, and salivary gland surgeries. By viewing the nerve’s action potential in real-time, the surgeon can be much more precise in preserving nerve function, which is a decisive factor in the patient’s optimal post-operative outcome.

Integrating technology into our processes allows us to stay at the forefront of modern medicine and continue to offer accessible and high-quality care.
